APR Calculator: Convert Any Loan Fee to a Yearly Rate

Lenders quote fees, points, tips, and monthly rates because each unit flatters the offer. APR is the common scale, and this tool converts any fee into it.

Offers reach you in whatever unit favors the lender: a fee per hundred, a flat charge, a monthly rate, even a tip. Only the annual percentage rate puts them on level ground, because it states the price of the money for a year. Enter any amount, any fee, and any term, and this tool returns that single number. The defaults restate the market’s common case, a $45 fee on $300 for 14 days, which is about 391% APR.

Move the term field and watch the rate move with it. The same $45 over 30 days instead of 14 falls to about 182%, because the fee now buys more than twice the time. Nothing about the fee changed; the clock did. That sensitivity is why a two-week quote and a one-month quote are never comparable until both are annualized.

Two benchmarks give the number meaning. Federal law caps the rate for most servicemembers at 36% under the Military Lending Act, a line Congress judged strict enough to be worth writing down, which tells you how the trade reads at the low end. At the other end, sovereign tribal lenders in this region price 400% to 800% APR across multi-month schedules, and those are the offers this conversion exists to expose.

Line items: common questions, answered straight

What is APR in plain language?
It is the cost of borrowing expressed as a yearly rate, including the finance charge the loan carries. APR exists so a two-week fee and a six-month rate can be compared without conversion tables. It does not predict what you will pay on a 14-day loan; it tells you what the pricing would cost if you repeated it all year, which is exactly the comparison that matters.
Why is a two-week loan's APR so high?
Because a year holds 26 of them. A 15% fee sounds mild until you multiply it by the number of times it could recur in a year, which is what the 365 in the formula does. The APR is not exaggerating the loan; it is translating the fee into the only unit that lets you stack it against a credit card, a credit union loan, or an installment schedule.
Does this calculator work for monthly rates?
Not directly, but the conversion is short. Multiply a monthly rate by twelve for a rough annual figure, or enter the monthly charge as a fee with a 30-day term and let the tool annualize it precisely. A 4% monthly charge on $300, entered as a $12 fee for 30 days, comes out just under 49% APR, which is the honest yearly version of that quote.
Where does APR appear on a real offer?
On the federal Truth in Lending disclosure every lender must provide before you sign, stated as the annual percentage rate alongside the finance charge and the payment schedule. Sovereign tribal lenders follow the same TILA requirement. If a quote arrives without an APR box, that absence is itself an answer: run the numbers here, then read our disclosure page to see how we price the offers this site discusses.
